Dec. 13, 2023 - Rep. Joe Adams (R-Wayne/Pike) has announced plans to introduce legislation that would mandate the teaching of cursive in Pennsylvania's schools. According to Adams, the ability to write and read cursive is a fundamental skill that everyone should learn. He emphasizes that important historical documents like the Constitution and Declaration of Independence are written in cursive, and signatures and official documents often require cursive writing.

Adams states, "When students are no longer taught how to read and write in cursive, they find themselves unprepared to learn from our history or be engaged in conducting business across the Commonwealth."

The proposed legislation would require instruction in cursive handwriting or joined italics in the appropriate grade levels. If passed, Pennsylvania would become the 19th state to mandate the teaching of cursive.

Adams also highlights the developmental benefits of learning cursive, citing recent studies that indicate increased hand-eye coordination, critical thinking skills, and increased self-confidence among students who learn to write in cursive.

He further argues that learning cursive helps create a written self-identity that distinguishes human work from that of Artificial Intelligence and deters plagiarism. Adams believes that this important skill should be required in the classroom.

To learn more about the proposal, the co-sponsorship memo can be found on Rep. Joe Adams' website.
